@2{Edword Professional v5.O
@3
}Reviewed by Mike Richmond
@4
This is not a full review (not my territory!), but an update to Andy Smith's
review of v4.1 in AZ1 (Remember that?) I have reviewed the latest
registered version, which is available free of charge to registered users
and costs just £1O to non registered users.
Yet another update, although I don't see why there has been such a large
jump in version number. There are loads of new features and speed has
been increased. The most notable new features are:
@3
o OS3 look - 3D slider bars and white menus with black text. Now I
can pretend I've got an A12OO!
o A WB2/3 style file requester. It's not bad, certainly far better
than any previous ones. Evry time you load the program you have to
clear the filter, though, because it defaults to #?.CONFIG for some
reason. You can also elect to use the crappy ASL or brilliant
Reqtools requesters. The RT requester is not implemented properly
(it does not store the directory listing), so I configure Edword to
use ASL.Library and use the RTPatch program for the better Reqtools
requester.
@3
o Preferences are split up into loads of sections in a new menu.
o Edword works properly in a window, no more accidently clicking
buttons on a non-full size window. If you don't understand this,
it doesn't matter, but it makes editing CLIndex files miles easier!
o The brilliant calculator is now a separate program, EdCalc. Values
can still be passed from EdCalc to Edwpord, so users are not
affected.
o Edword Iconifies properly (i.e. it turns into an icon on Workbench)
o Edword has started crashing. Bad news I am afraid, unlike the rock
steady version 2.2 I used to use, version 5 has now crashed twice
(and I've only had it a week), both times in the middle of important
documents. (Make that three, the file requester just crashed!)
o The word-wrap still jumbles up your words when it wraps them.

Even though there are a few problems, Edword is the best text editor
available for the Amiga (including all the commercial ones I have used),
but I can't recommend it as strongly as previous versions. Another mark off
the overall for that. My ratings are (Andy's are in brackets)
@3 Features (10) 10 - There are more features so it
can't go down!
Docs (8) 8 - Still Amigaguide, still good.
Still no printed manual.
Ease of Use (9) 9 - Could be hard to get to grips
with more complex features but
immediately usable by the casual
typer.
Speed (9) 8 - Is it just me or has the speed
of reaction to typing slowed
down? Many Menu functions are
quicker than 4.1.
Overall (9) 7 - Sorry, but any program that crashes
during important work will get slated
by me. Yes, I did complain when
OctaMED crashed on me, so don't go
saying I have double standards. Amos
Pro isn't exactly rock steady either.
Well it was until I added Turbo_Plus
to it. @1End.
